The Green Loop is a concept for a 6-mile linear park and active transportation corridor in Portland’s central city, connecting both sides of the Willamette River. It leverages existing open space, the public right-of-way and building setbacks to create a vibrant ribbon of greenways where people can move, linger and gather. Whether it’s connecting to parks and civic hubs or creating new spaces for activity in the right-of-way, the Green Loop aims to bring the city to life. Common elements such as wayfinding signage and landscape features establish a cohesive loop identity, while artwork and furnishings reflect the unique character of the neighborhoods.
Mayer/Reed led studies for the Lloyd District, Central Eastside, South Downtown, North Park Blocks, Lower Albina, OMSI District-Central Eastside and Midtown sections of the Green Loop. The reports document conditions, recommend opportunities for open space and setbacks, evaluate alignment options and establish conceptual designs. The initiative guides district master plans, helping to prioritize infrastructure projects and informing private development.
