Mayer/Reed designed site and landscape improvements for the hospital’s new 2.4-acre addition that expands a new lobby and emergency care facilities. Reclaiming space from a former parking lot, Mayer/Reed created a series of gardens and pedestrian spaces that celebrate the quality of life and promote the center as an institution of health, wellness and healing.
The entry garden is a gracious and welcoming space that receives patients and visitors; they improve the wayfinding and identity of the hospital. Off-site views of the Rogue Valley mountain ranges are featured from within the gardens. Terraced Sensory Gardens of textural, colorful, and fragrant seasonal plantings provide meditative, quiet spaces to help rejuvenate staff, patients and family members. The gardens offer amenities such as a soothing water feature, soft lighting, benches, shade trees, all-season plantings, and works of art. Small seating alcoves provide discreet outdoor conversation areas. The Sensory Gardens incorporate waterfalls and ponds that take advantage of the site’s grade changes.
