Portland Community College opened its newest campus to offer college transfer and career training courses to Yamhill County residents. The center, located on a 16-acre site in the heart of the region’s agricultural district, includes a 13,500 sf academic building, vegetated storm water treatment gardens, community open space, and service areas. The building features a student commons area that opens onto an outdoor courtyard designed for open-air classroom use and flexible space for college and community events. Building identity is integrated into a seat wall at the entry plaza.
Mayer/Reed worked with PCC and the design team to create a site master plan that located initial and subsequent buildings, and to optimize building orientation for solar gain. The Newberg Center establishes a new benchmark for PCC’s green and sustainability initiatives.
