The 96,000 sf McMurtry Building is the new home for Stanford’s Department of Art and Art History, an interdisciplinary hub for the arts. The project encourages collaboration from strategic adjacencies between the programs, including art history, film making, media and studio arts. The open building form locates “making” and “studying” in discrete strands, each clad in its own material, that wrap around a central atrium. The typography for Mayer/Reed’s signage and wayfinding design is fully integrated with the architectural finishes of each strand to clearly differentiate locations.
