The new 36,000 sf Divine Academic Building and 14,500 sf Hunter Gymnasium anchor a central campus redesign which modernizes the historic Washington School for the Deaf and opens it toward the surrounding community.
As the signage and experiential graphic design firm on the team, Mayer/Reed designed elements that communicate welcome and contribute to renewed school pride. A 72-foot-long art gate is an iconic focal point of the redesigned school, symbolizing WSD’s spirit while providing transparent security for the heart of campus. Spanning the two new buildings, the gate showcases the school name and value statements against a backdrop pattern of the American Sign Language finger-spelling alphabet. Crafted from painted aluminum and featuring flowing laser-cut designs, the gate is both artistic and functional.
